I really did disappear for a while didn't I? Well I've never been known for keeping to a schedule. Uni has started and I'm in deep with assignments and things that needs to be read and done. You know how it is. But last year is not a joke, that's for sure.
So onto something completely different. Here's my thoughts about the famous novel The Goldfinch that took a long time for me to read and once I got a hold of it, it took even longer to finish.

Title: The Goldfinch
Author: Donna Tartt
Year Published: 2013
Synopsis: After his mother is killed in a horrible explosion, 13 year old Theo Decker miraculously survives. He is taken in by a wealthy friend's family but he's constantly tormented by the longing for his mother. Throughout the years he clings to the thing that reminds him most of her: a small captivating painting that later in life drags him into the criminal underworld.
My thoughts:
Where to start lads? I personally don't know because I just have such a hate love for it. It's long, possibly too long, with it's 800+ pages it takes you on a journey through Theo Decker's very messy life. I read maybe 300 pages before I put it down and took a long break from it. It's such a claustrophobic read I found and so much time is spent on things that don't seem to matter. And Theo is such an unreliable narrator and that's frustrating at times. You don't know what he's leaving out and what is actually true. It's a difficult book and it was after months when I finally finished it that I realised what it was actually trying to do. I got a little obsessed afterwards. Now it's finally left me, I don't constantly go around thinking of Theo and Boris (who is my favourite character I have you know) and how they should have gotten together. I will try not to spoil it and while I do recommend people to read it I do think you should prepare yourself for it absolutely not being about what it says it's about. It's definitely good, but it's long and pretentious at times and Theo is so dislikable in parts of the book. But I gave it 3/5 stars so it's definitely a recommendation. I am now reading her first novel called The Secret History and so far it has a similar vibe but it's also very different and not as difficult to read.
