You can imagine I'm screaming that headline because I definitely am. Finally, finally, finally I got to see the musical (not live obv) on Disney+. I've seen it twice already and I might have driven my parents to insanity because I keep playing the soundtrack over and over and over again and they are not impressed. Well bad luck for them, they have birthed a child who easily gets obsessed and doesn't let go of things easily, not until I have squeezed out every ounce of it and devoured all the knowledge there is about it. Am I going to become a pro at american civil war historian because of this? Well, maybe, *goes to search for books*.
This musical has had such a massive impact and honestly I understand why. It's one of those things that changes you fundamentally when you watch it, no really I swear. Well if you're anyone except for Mike Pence but he's trash so it shouldn't be hard to be better than that. Making a goddamn rap musical about one of the founding fathers and how America came to be shouldn't be possible, I mean that wording just sounds insane. And somehow Lin-Manuel Miranda has made just that. Such catchy songs, messages relevant today, that will transcend into the future and be important then too. 'It's the story of America then, told now' which is exactly what it is. But it also makes sense that a lot of the songs are told through, creative, funny, snappy and incredible raps because there's so much history to be conveyed in a short amount of time, and what better way to do it than having the characters spit lyrically about it?
It has a really good cast too, the best one being Aaron Burr (Leslie Odom Jr.) of course. God, he's so tragic and beautiful and I just love him too much. Lin-Manuel Miranda really has given him the most beautiful song to ever be sung, well maybe not, but it's up there. He's an insane singer, oh my god, Wait for it gave me shivers and I can't help but wanting to sing it at the top of my lungs every time I hear it. And he's the anti hero to Hamilton in lots of ways because the actual villain is Jefferson, but Burr's driven towards his actions in the end because of The Ham being an absolute dickhead, and you take his side 100%. Which is the brilliance of it.
Then Davee Diggs as Lafayette and Thomas Jefferson, BRILLIANT man! His clothes and dancing as Jefferson is such a highlight. He must have had the time of his life doing it. Also can someone gift me his fabulous purple coat? No, aaww. I want it though. I also want Madison as my hype man because getting announced like that when I enter rooms, or supported like they way he is, yes please. The whole cast really is incredible, Angelica and Eliza too, such incredible singers and characters.
Basically all I want to do is go to Broadway and watch this musical live with the original cast, that is my dream. It's still showing but not with the OG cast, so next best thing is then to actually be allowed to see this on the stage because it's an experience I wouldn't want to miss. Sooooo, how about corona f*cks off now and Boris gets his shit together and cuts a deal with the EU so I can at least see it at the west end.
