Little Women Review

Title: Little Women

Synopsis: Jo March reflects back and forth on her life, telling the beloved story of the March sisters - four young women each determined to live life on their own terms.

My thoughts:

Based on the best selling novel by author Louisa M. Alcott the book has been adapted numerous times before. I'm not going to lie, I came into this film with nothing, having heard of it of course, but never read nor seen any of the other adaptations of it. All I knew was that it was loved by many. I have seen it twice now, once in the cinema where I teared up within 10 minutes and once at home where I also didn't last long before the tears were streaming down my face. I find it to be an extremely emotional film and Greta has managed to create a piece of art that speaks to the many issues women face in each generation throughout their lives. My mother sent me a text the other week where she said she went to see this on her own at the cinema, crying her eyes out, similarly to when she saw it in the cinema in 1994.

The cast is brilliant and they give such life to all the March sisters. Jo is the natural one to get the most attention and probably love. And I do love her, her stubbornness and ambition and her refusal to settle for anything. Saoirse is great in this role, vibrant and fun. But I think ultimately the one I love the most is Amy. From what I understand she's been disliked for decades because of what she does to Jo (it's cruel) and it is truly impressive that Gerwig and Pugh manages to give her a redemption arc after so many years in the shadows. As a young child she's funny and extra and naive and very egocentric in many regards. She's also loud and ambitions and she is the one that clashes the most with Jo. It's the rivalry between the sisters that gets to me because I see a lot of me and my own sister in them. It just hits home.

Meg has a beautiful quote "Just because my dreams are different to yours doesn't mean they are unimportant" which nails it all on its head really? Just because women want different things in life doesn't mean anyone should be degraded for it. All of the sisters, honestly I would say all of the characters have moments to shine and its such a good and beautiful cast. The whole film feels vibrant and alive and the music that softly strums throughout it brought tears to my eyes, a lot of times. I just really love this film and I could write pages on why that is. 2019 really was a good year of film and if there is one film to see it's totally this one.

5/5
